Floyd Howlett spent a lifetime working for peace, justice and new ways of being the church in the world. He spent thirty years working as an ecumenical partner of the United Church of Christ in Japan (under the auspices of the United Church of Canada) where he was director of the Northern Hokkaido Christian Centre working with church, community and farm groups.
Before going to Japan, Floyd was the minister on the Esterhazy Pastoral Parish in Saskatchewan. After returning to Canada in 1981 he spent six years on the Program Staff of the Prairie Christian Training Centre, an adult education facility of the United Church in Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan.

What people are saying
"What a delight! A rich Canadian narrative of Christian faith, wrestling with the challenges of a world in the throes of conflict and transition. This book confirms the presence of the Spirit in the struggles for mutual recognition across historic divides of distance and language, culture and religion, the struggles for justice and peace everywhere. Most highly recommended!"
- Prof. Lee Cormie, Faculty of Theology St. Michael's College, University of Toronto
"Floyd tells his story with passion and integrity. He challenges us to remember and tell our own stories with a view to formulating a believable, responsive and transformative faith. Such a faith not only comforts and empowers the individual person, it pushes us to redemptive action for the sake of the world."
- Very Rev. Bill Phipps, Former Moderator United Church of Canada
Excerpt from the book
"I am fully aware that the word "churchianity" does not occur in the dictionary but for me it sums up succinctly what has been the challenge of my life of separating authentic Christianity from a church centred pseudo-Christianity, far removed from the life and teaching of Jesus. The basis for the title, Beyond Churchianity, I take from the words of the Dutch theologian J.C. Hoekendijk who challenged church-centric missionary thinking about Christianity, saying it had gone astray because it revolves around an illegitimate centre. The proper alternative, he said, is to place the world and the Kingdom at the centre of our theology of mission. This same sanes of dichotomy in the church has been my own experience working both within the church in Japan and in Canada."

About the Author
Floyd Howlett was born in 1921 and grew up on a farm in the village of West Montrose, near Kitchener, Ontario. He graduated with a Master of Arts from Victoria College, University of Toronto, a Bachelor of Divinity from Emmanuel College, and a Master of Theology from the Toronto School of Theology.
Floyd's dissatisfaction with church-centred Christianity led him to explore, both in Japan and Canada, innovative ways of living out the mandate of Jesus in society.
